Don’t you just love it when homophobes get caught being messy? We sure do.
So how is this for some juicy gossip? LGBTQ Nation reports that Republican Senator Joey Hensley from Tennessee is making plans to marry his lover Lori Barber (who is leaving her current husband). Another lawmaker caught in a compromising affair? Nothing new, seems to happen all the time right? Well, it turns out that Hensley and Barber are actually cousins.
Yes! That’s right. Hensely, who is noted as being one of the “staunchest opponents of LGBTQ rights” and declared himself in 2012 to be a “family values Republican” is breaking up the marriage of his own cousin so he can be with her.
But wait! It doesn’t end there, the kicker is that Hensley is actually Barber’s employer; she works as a nurse in his office.
So, why this relevant? Well besides being entertaining gossip, it’s fascinating that Republicans and homophobes feel so entitled to dedicating their careers to explaining why the LGBTQ community is a threat to families and values alike, when they’re breaking up marriages to be with their own cousins. Hensely sponsored the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in 2012 before it was killed. This year, in addition to being with his cousin he’s making it his personal mission to make children born from artificial insemination illegitimate, a bill called HB1406. Basically what this means is that if you did not actually have a direct role in conceiving the child, you could only claim your rights as a parent by filing for a second parent adoption, which could cost up to $6,500.
But rather than imposing on the personal lives of same-sex couples, Hensely should be worried about his own affair which is “a direct conflict with the American Medical Association code of ethics and state board guidelines.”
