Alan Menken, known for composing the music from your favorite movies, has voiced his desire for Harevy Fierstein to play Ursula in The Little Mermaid live action film in an interview with Gay Times.
“I’ve wanted Harvey,” he said. “I’ve wanted Harvey Fierstein to play Ursula. I would kill for that!”
Fierstein just played Edna Turnblad in the live production of Hairspray, the role he originated on Broadway and wrote for. Fierstein also wrote La Cage aux Folles, Casa Valentina, Torch Song Trilogy and Disney’s Newsies, all hallmark queer shows.
“We wanted that, and we would love it in a flash!” he exclaimed.
Well Alan, your wish has been granted! Fierstein took to Facebook to accept the offer.
Originally slated to be directed by Sofia Copolla and starring Chloë Grace Moretz, the film is without a star or a director but we imagine that’ll change soon on the heels of Beauty and the Beasts‘ record breaking success at the box office.
That said, Tony winner and Academy Award Nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda is supposedly hard at work on writing new songs for the film. If they’re anything like “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, we’re sold!
Who do you think should play Ursula?
