Is there any member of the Trump administration that’s not dedicated to just lying about everything? (That was a rhetorical question, we know the answer is no).
ABC’s 20/20 did an investigation on extremist religious groups who support conversion therapy, and the role Mike Pence played in supporting their message. According to those individuals, they saw Pence as an “ally.” And while a spokesperson for Pence didn’t reject the practice, they did have this to say:
“… any assertion that Vice President-elect Pence supported or advocated for conversion therapy is patently false and is a mischaracterization of language.
The Vice President-elect has a long record of supporting efforts to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, was also a strong supporter of AIDS Africa relief legislation (known as PEPFAR) and, as Governor of Indiana, provided strong and compassionate leadership to confront an HIV epidemic in Southern Indiana in 2015.”
Here’s the facts: Mike Pence was directly responsible for an HIV outbreak during his time as Governor of Indiana by way of not expanding HIV services and preventative measures like needle exchange, while refusing to provide state funding for those looking to tackle to disease head on. And to make matters worse, he promised to veto bills that would have given a stronger and more urgent response to the growing crisis.
But wait! There’s more. Pence also wrote on his very own website (used while he was campaigning in 2000):
“Congress should support the reauthorization of the [HIV funding] Ryan White Care Act only after completion of an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organiaztions that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviours that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”
So, maybe Pence prefers “alternative facts” but the rest of us prefer real ones, and there’s a lot that substantiates claims that he’s been anti-LGBTQ for his entire career.
