Mylinda Mason, better known as the organizer of “Straight Pride,” is facing some push back in the form of her son.
Matthew Mason, who identifies as gay, has organized a candlelit vigil in direct opposition to his mother’s event according to the Modesto Bee.
“We don’t want hate in Modesto. I am making sure Modesto is not a place for hate speech,” he said.
Mason explains that his family did not embrace him upon coming out at the age of 19, and remains estranged from his mother to this day.
“They believe Western Civilization should be straight, white and Christian with a very specific gender binary,” he explained. “They believe this should be a culture war. It’s rhetoric I’ve heard my whole life.”
As if that wasn’t enough cause for concern, the Straight Pride event has a very troubling connection to a far-right group known as the “Proud Boys,” a Neo-fascist organization which openly preach and promote violence. The event is essentially a white supremacy celebration masquerading as a celebration of heterosexuality.
“I am all for free speech, I am not for free speech when it incites violence, Mason explains. “I am working with my community to provide spaces for us to work together and utilize our right to public discourse to provide safety, diversity and love in our city.”
His mother, however, walks back his claims, saying that any “intolerance” isn’t coming from “their side,” and that actually the opposition is coming from “the other side.”
“We are more than happy to see they are going to have a candlelight vigil,” Mylinda said. “We are not happy they are going to try to shut down our side and deny us peaceable assembly.”
The event is set to take place on August 24 in Modesto, California.
