This Miami based gay hotel goes digital to help people practice social distancing
Though necessary during this chaotic time, social distancing has made it hard to feel connected. Hotel Gaythering is helping combat that loneliness.
As the world’s inhabitants continue to lock themselves in their homes while the number of people succumbing to COVID-19 rises, businesses have been forced to adapt. Bars and restaurants have converted to a “Take Out only” model or closed up shop altogether, while other industries are doing whatever they can to stop the hemorrhaging.
Hotel Gaythering, based in Miami, is one of those businesses that has been forced to get creative in this of crisis. “The gayest hotel in Miami Beach” has made everything that’s made them so popular accessible to people online. That’s right! Drag Queen karaoke, bingo and trivia nights have been taking place on the internet to overwhelmingly positive reception. According to Forbes, some 600 attendees participated in their online trivia night.
“The Gathering has been the foundation of the LGBT community in Miami Beach and in the coronavirus outbreak they have taken the weekly event digital to re-connect us with our friends and community. The trivia provides light fun but also a sense of connectedness that we are in this together,” Aaron Bos Lun told Forbes.
Bingo and trivia apps have helped make the games accessible to everyone and the transition of in person experience to a digital one seamless. The live-sing alongs are hosted by a Drag Queen from the safety of her apartment.
Though necessary during this chaotic time, social distancing has made it hard for those who depend on getting outside and being social to feel balanced. And while these events will never capture the true essence of an in person conversation or event, they are providing a sense of community during what has been a lonely time for many out there.
So make sure you’re not only staying inside and being safe, but to flex those social muscles too! It’s important to check in with your friends and family and to keep things as normal as possible. Join in on the fun with Hotel Gathering, or host your own trivia night or Happy Hour of your own.
